Evelyn Uriostegui As years go by, the meaning of Social Justice has changed and it has become more significant to me. Social Justice is to have equality and not be discriminated no matter who you are, where you come from, or by the appearance. Everyone deserves equality because we all are people and their is no difference among us. Many people go through sex-based discrimination, meaning that people are being treated different due to their gender. Specially the female gender, they are classified as weaker, not capable of doing certain jobs, or by how they dress therefore our self-esteem decreases.
Some obstacles that prohibit us from achieving social justice is the way certain people think. Being a women is one way of being discriminated as a person. I remember a time being in class and having a male teacher, everyone would respect him and would pay attention to him. But when a female teacher was teaching another class students would disrespect her and would treat her harshly. As years go by, I have noticed that many people are discriminated by their gender, but I have taken to account that you can prove them wrong by showing others everyone is capable of the doing the same things and make them learn how to respect each other. Another example, is in families when parents think that their daughter needs more protection and have more attention than their son if they have one. This is wrong because both daughter and son need the same attention, protection, and same treatment. This depends on family believe not all of the families are similar. There has been positives situation like in certain jobs many people (bosses) do not determine who are they going to hire base on their gender. They just look at your resume and see how hard worker you are and get the job.
Some strategies that can help us achieve social justice is by making awareness, protesting, and having our future children not have a discriminative mentality on gender. The way I take action on achieving social justice is by wearing a blue ribbon on the month of April that provides everyone to have awareness on Sexual assault. Sometimes being sex-base discriminative can lead to sexual assault or even rape. Some people are threaten that if they speak up about being sex-base discriminated there will be consequences. For example, if your boss is discriminating you for your gender they could tell you that if you speak up you could get fired, not get pay, or even call the police and tell them that you had made a crime. I wear this ribbon because I have family and friends that have been through this situation and could not speak up because many people would not believe them. Some people would say that they are just lying to get more benefits. For example medical treatments or money. This proves that some people are being brainwashed due to what people spread around or other people have a different perspectives on situations that happen to believe in cruel ideas.
Finally, my role is to inform the community about their rights towards gender bias. Living in a community that is not well inform on their rights due to being from another country gives me an opportunity to maintain awareness on this situation and motivate them to speak up. An example are immigrants people that come to the United States to have better job and have money to maintain their family, but could be discriminated and scared to speak up because their bosses could call the police and send them back to their country. My rights, fire for the future is that I want to become a Chicago police officer and help my community to be treated with equality no matter the gender they are and to not be scared doing certain situations where gender is more important than anything else. For example, believe and listen to both sides of the story, to not make an assumption of who has the fault for just listening to one story. I want children to see that they have opportunities in this country and that not because they were born a female they are going to be less than a male. We need to show our struggle on overcoming that obstacle of being female, male, lesbian, gay, or what ever gender they classify themselves to achieve social justice among us all. Like once Martin Luther king Jr said “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward”. This means that we should try over and over again no matter what and never give up. If we speak up their could be a change in the world.
Alejandra Martinez Sexual assault in children is a very important topic that people know about it but they hardly talk about the situation. Sexual assault in children is when an older person touches a minor in a perverted manner. Many of these children tell their parents but parents think that since they are young they don’t know what they are saying or if they are just trying to get attention. This issue has been around the past 10 years more than 20,000 American children have been victims about sexual abuse but the worst part is that the organization of American children reports that about 1,825 children are being abused each day. Many of these kids get affected in so many ways for example they have trouble learning, eating, sleeping and sometimes it gets to the point where these young children become suicide because since some parents don’t believe them and they are asking them for help they think thats the only way to get over the problem.
Parents need to be inform and prevent their child from being in danger and they are also many organizations that parents and children can attend if they are going through this hard situation. Parents can prevent sexual assault in children by asking their child how was there day but most importantly have good communication and trust . Also every parent should know the 27 tricks sexual predators use which one of them is that they try to be “friendly” to a children. Many of these children at first don’t know what’s going on meanwhile the predator is doing what he thinks it's right. Many parents actually believe what their children tells them and that's how it should be because no matter how old you are there's times where you would need help not just from your parents but from organizations that would help the victim and their families overcome the situation.
Effects of child abuse
Some children who have been sexual abuse have been emotionally affected and get brain damage in a very harm's way. Reports show that anxiety is what's the most common for a children because it shows that they want to “run” from the tragedy that they are going through. Parents who have attend to organizations to receive help have to take their children constantly because 30% of their sleep has to deal with remembering the abuse they went through. As these children grow up they have to keep going to therapy according to sexual abuse traumatic stressed. Some children have committed suicide because their parents don’t believe them or they feel hopeless since they have no help. Alot of these cases of child abuse happens either from a family member or a moms boyfriend or a fathers girlfriend.
Parents usually say “They're too young to understand however young children are affected by traumatic even though they may not understand what happen” (unknown)
A childrens body gets affected by many symptoms and reactions the children can have a long through their years. This doesn’t just hurt them emotionally but some of these kids as they are being sexual abuse can’t take it and they start to have eating disorders or could hardly sleep. Organizations help children like these and help parents as well so it wont happen again the situation get harder and harder because even though childrens grow get marry and continue with their lives they still remember and wake up at night remembering what happen throughout their childhood. Children should have a nice joyful memory remembering all the good things they did as a child but unfortunately not all of them get to have the chance to have that. My goal is to let people know that sometimes organizations might help since it's better because these children get to say everything that they feel it doesn't matter if they are young they still know what's going on with them.
This issue matters because no children should have a childhood memory like that every single children deserves a nice memory but most importantly parents need to know what is going on with their children. My goal is to let parents know that they are many organizations where there children can be assist with professional help and there are other organizations as well where parents can know the facts and prevent a there children from being in danger from those who would do harm in a children. Once a parent finds out there child has been abuse and knows the person who did it that person has to write their name in the sexual predator list. According to the criminal justice sexual predators go to jail for over 10 years depending how big the crime was.
