Local Context
My issue connects to Chicago and the larger US because sexual assault is a worldwide issue that has existed for more than 10 years. Activisms in our community help out organizations by letting people know what's going on within the community. Students can partnership with organizations and help out to pass this big message around that sexual assault in our community is an issue and that we can all help to prevent this issue. Students can do projects by letting others know what sexual assault is and what it means since most people don’t actually know. Also since this issue has become worldwide and it has existed since slavery time but it would only affect young girls and young women now it affects both genders everyone can help organizations and letting people know that if we all manage to stay together we can all prevent this issue.
A child should have a joyful memory full of happiness and order to keep that organizations could receive help from everyone and let others know. if “500,000 babies are born every year and are exposed to be abused by the age of 18” I think that everyone can do something to prevent this issue. Its not fair that a sexual predator only goes to jail has to pay a fine and register as a sexual predator meanwhile he/she has ruin a young child's life and would have to face a problem like this. Everyone can do something to prevent this issue and help those who are or have been going through the situation.
Sexual assault to children connects to Chicago and the larger U.S because there have been cases for this issue not only in our local community, but also U.S. For example, in the article name Elburn cop charged in sexual assault of girl over 10-year period written by Chicago tribune it states that a police officer from Elburn Illinois had sexually assaulted a child over ten years. This happen around the month of March of 2005 until April 2015 the female child was raped since the age of 13. This article also states that the police officer was held in Kane County Jail on $500,000 bail and the next court would happen on May 6 which he is charged with 10 counts of predatory criminal sexual assaults, a Class X felony, and 11 counts of criminal sexual assault. This shows us once again that those who are suppose to protect us which is their job do not even do it and that in our own community this issue continues to happen. This issue does not only happen in Illinois, but in other place of the U.S. According to the article Philadelphia Catholic monsignor ordered back to prison in child sex abuse case which was written by 610 KDAL New-Weather- Sports explains how a Philadelphia catholic priest was sent back to prison due him not wanting to admit that he committed sexual assault to children. The priest was sentenced in the year of 2012 to three to six years in prison for committing welfare of children. In the year of 1999 the priest sexually assaulted a 10 year- old altar boy and was found guilty. This illustrate not this is an issue that does not only happen in one place, but all over the world. For the past few decades, many people have created organizations that would either help the victims or try to prevent this issue to happen again with other children. Chicago Children's Advocacy Center helps children that have experience this tragic event safety, health and well-being of abused children. This organization helps children to continue their life with any problems or concerns of what happen to them. This supports the idea of people creating organization to help children the best they can and not having issues there have been other organization that also help children an example is CAASE (Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation), Mujeres Latinas En Accion, YWCA Metropolitan Chicago RISE Children’s Center, etc. There has been organization made that are taking action to prevent sexual assault towards children. An example is Pinwheels for prevention its an organization that people go around and put pinwheel around parks that reminds people of childlike and the chance that would let children be healthy, happy and full lives all children deserve. This demonstrate how people are trying to make awareness to people to think what they are going to do before doing it. That their action harms families and mostly the victim. Students can partner with local organizations to become activist- allies in addressing areas of concern by trying to help children or create awareness. The organization called Prevent Child Abuse America explains that people who would want to prevent should this issue they should try to talk and be friends with children and see if the child acts different than usual than that could be a sign that children are going through a rough situation and it should be addressed. People who want to help can also volunteer to pass out the pinwheels to create awareness. The organization of Sexual Assault Awareness Month states how people can download a flyer that could aware people of the issue and can upload it on social media. On April 7th college student had posters and protested against sexual assault. This is an example of how people are already taking action of this issue and trying to decrease the number of victims that go through this horrible situation.
